Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should look to overhaul their data centres with new advanced technologies and operation systems when attempting to reduce the carbon footprint or cut costs.
This is according to a representative from IT firm Zycko, who suggested that educating users on the importance of streamlining technologies and doing simple things like turning off the computer at the end of the day could help to both cut costs and protect data.
"Products like Verdiem physically enforce [the savings]. They take away the reliance on users - you can educate them but they may still forget to turn their PC off at the end of the night," said Darren Clare, head of IT at the company.
"[This,] multiplied by 30 people, is a lot of money over the course of 12 months. So what you can do with [IT management system] Verdiem is take away any user error and make sure that the software on the machine will enforce that policy and shut the PC down," he added
Mr Clare explained that SMEs should look to the office area, the head office, the branch office and the data centre to find ways where they can improve their output and analyse where systems can be made more streamlined, as well as assess green credentials.
Additionally, a representative from Compuware, a provider of software focused on optimising IT application performance for companies, recently suggested that modern technology is integral to the success of a business.
Neil Richards, European mainframe director at the organisation, commented that firms should regularly look at how they can improve the day-to-day running with technologies that are both efficient and cost-effective.
In light of these comments, Mr Clare also mentioned that a main focus of SMEs should be reducing costs and improving the carbon footprint.
According to chron.com, an online news provider, applying green solutions to the workplace creates a healthy environment for employees and makes positive changes to waste produced in office spaces.
