Google finishes 2008 with 62.9% search share
Google's search engine dominance continued in the US during 2008, with the company finishing the year with a market share of 62.9 per cent, according to new statistics.
Nielsen Online found that 5.4 billion individual searches were carried out through Google in December 2008, up 33.5 per cent on the year before.
This figure is almost four billion more than its nearest rival Yahoo!, which was up 13.7 per cent in December for a market share of 16.8 per cent.
MSN/Windows Live Search experienced a decline in searches over the 12-month period, with December's statistic of 841 million down 15.5 per cent on the year before.
It has a 9.8 per cent share of the market, more than double AOL Search's 4.1 per cent, which came after 5.1 per cent year-on-year growth.
The only search engines in the top ten that grew quicker than Google were Comcast - up 45.1 per cent to 50 million - and BizRate Search, which rose 37.1 per cent to 23.5 million.
Google also topped comScore's US search engine rankings with a 63.5 per cent market share.
