Before purchasing a domain name, companies should try to investigate its history and see if it has been used by another firm, it has been recommended.
Alan Cox wrote for Practical eCommerce this week that if the previous individual or organisation had been blacklisted by the search engines in the past then this could hurt the new company taking its place.
"The search engines never forget and your e-commerce store could suffer from a previously banned or blacklisted domain," he remarked.
Mr Cox suggested that researching history should form part of an overall strategy when deciding which domain name to purchase.
Other things that companies should bear in mind is considering what makes them unique from their competitors and deciding what kind of domain name would indicate this, he said.
Using keywords in domain names is a useful tool to boost search engine rankings, Mr Cox added.
Domain Informer suggested this week that organisations should ensure they have the appropriate domain code, such as .com, .net or .biz, in order "to reflect the nature of the business".
