IT analyst Gartner has predicted that the market for server virtualisation software will be worth approximately $6.2 billion (£4.1 billion) by 2013.
In its top ten predictions for 2009 list, the organisation projected an annual growth rate of 28 per cent for the sector, which will see it increase in size markedly from the $1.8 billion value recorded in 2008.
According to Gartner, virtualisation has had a big impact on the IT industry as a whole and will continue to do so.
It advised firms that have not yet looked at virtualisation to start considering it as a potential solution.
"Gartner recommends organisations openly evaluate and implement virtualisation at both server and desktop level to save money and remain competitive," the company said.
The forecast was made at the Gartner Predicts 2009 event in Sydney over the weekend.
It follows the news that virtualisation market leader VMware is to release an open source client for virtual desktops for the first time.
