Citing links to external sites benefits a business's search engine optimisation (SEO) and as such its rankings, it has been claimed.
SEOmozBlog co-founder and chief executive officer randfish has highlighted the reasons why small to medium businesses should link out to other sites.
He explained that linking to a website that gets its own hordes of visitors, businesses are showcasing themselves to more potential customers.
Moreover, websites that link out tend to notice the gesture is reciprocated, according to randfish.
He explained: "When you link out, it creates a signal to other websites and content creators that you're a willing participant in the web's natural linking environment."
This in turn, he claimed, will generate more traffic and boost SEO.
Web technology blog ReadWriteWeb recently claimed that the most important thing for businesses to consider when trying to maximise their SEO is keywords - in the text, pictures and URLs or the website.
