Companies need to ensure they get their ecommerce outlets right if they want to stand a chance of surviving commercially, an expert has claimed.
According to Dean Benson, founding director of digital firm VisualSoft, having a passive website that acts as a "shop window" is no longer enough.
In an article for nebusiness.co.uk, he noted that consumers that feel let down by ecommerce sites will rarely return.
Consequently, he said there is no point having an online retail portal unless the infrastructure is in place to make it a "smooth, informative and painless experience" for customers.
"To make online retailing a success , developers have to address the basics - design, availability of products, customer service and ease of use are crucial from a shopper's experience," Mr Benson commented.
He added that the website also needs to be able to take orders and process the payments without any problems.
This comes after a report from dotCommerce called Hitting the Checkout revealed that the top 20 online retailers in the UK still had areas for improvement with regards to their websites.
