Flash storage is likely to be an important technology in the future of managed hosting, it has been claimed.
This form of storage is faster than spinning disk drives, uses less power and takes up less space.
Consequently, data can be accessed in less than a millisecond, as opposed to a few milliseconds for a spinning disk.
Andrew Reichman, an analyst at Forrester Research, said that the data centres for cloud-based firms and managed hosting companies are so big that these advantages become particularly important.
He noted that the technology is more likely to be implemented in managed hosting firms than enterprise IT because of the relatively high cost.
This comes after market research analyst and consulting firm Techaisle asserted that £8.74 billion is likely to be spent on managed hosting technology during 2009.
It noted that year-on-year, this represents a 9.2 per cent increase and that the rate of growth is set to rise to 9.7 per cent in 2010..
