The dangers of using a domain name to illegally make movies, videos and music available to download has once again been highlighted.
It has been reported that the US Department of Justice and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have worked together to seize seven websites that were making television shows and movies available for free.
Among the domain names, which were getting visitors from around the world, were TVShack.net, Movies-Links.tv and Filespump.com.
They have all now been seized, along with assets from banks, PayPal and advertising accounts.
Preet Bharara, the US Attorney in Manhattan, told Dow Jones that taking this kind of action would send a warning to other potential offenders.
He said: "You should absolutely expect to see more actions like this, up to criminal enforcement against individuals."
Of course, it is possible for internet users to get access to movies and television shows legally through services such as iTunes, Hulu and BBC iPlayer, while websites such as YouTube allow individuals to upload their own content.
