Cloud computing a 'fundamental change' to the use of computers

Cloud computing a 'fundamental change' to the use of computers

Cloud computing is "as fundamental a change" as the introduction of mainframe computers in the 1960s, according to a technology commentator.

Richard Blackden, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, said that the introduction of cloud services can also be compared to "the development of servers and the arrival of the internet itself".

Many companies are turning to cloud computing to save money and reduce energy usage.

By using software as a service (SaaS), small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) use applications through the internet, therefore not paying for the managing and maintenance of running it on-site.

Sarah Friar, an analyst at the San Francisco office of Goldman Sachs, told the news provider that the advent of cloud computing cannot be brushed off.

"The shift to cloud computing is huge. It's one of those shifts that happen in technology once a decade or so," she said.

"It's not something that anyone of any size can afford to ignore."

SMBs that do use SaaS also gain from better security as the companies hosting the applications also manage updates.
