Online shopping in the UK rose dramatically over the Christmas period with nearly nine out of ten consumers logging onto the internet on December 25th and 26th.
This represents a ten per cent rise on the same time last year, according to market research specialist eDigitalResearch, who also found that 22 per cent of people accessed the internet through their smartphones.
Its research also found that 30 per cent of online consumers shopped on the internet on Boxing Day with a further 20 per cent looking to spend more through ecommerce in the post-Christmas sales.
eDigitalResearch's founding director Chris Russell said that there were many reasons why internet shopping was popular over the period.
"It is unsurprising that internet use over this festive period increased. Given the imminent January VAT hike and unpredictable weather conditions this year, retailers began 'after Christmas' sales earlier online than in stores, enticing shoppers to log on and shop for discounts," he said.
comScore's figures for the US painted a similar picture, with sales in the week ending December 26th 17 per cent higher than the same time last year.
