Low start-up costs could attract people that are out of work to start their own ecommerce site, according to a retail expert.
Richard Dodd, of the British Retail Consortium, said that there are few barriers to starting up an online business as people will not have to spend money on premises and staffing costs.
He added that if setting up an ecommerce site does not prove to be successful then it is easy to stop and do something else.
Kelkoo announced this week that online shopping spending increased by 16 per cent last year, compared to 2009, and that the average UK shopper spent £1,284 in the 12-month period.
Mr Dodd said that this, and the low risk nature of starting an ecommerce website, means that more people should look at doing it.
"Your costs can be very low so entry is quite easy - there's only a few barriers," he said.
"If you start up an online retail business and it doesn't go well, you can kill it off or change it to something else really quite easily."
