Ecommerce sales in the UK rose by 25 per cent in December, compared to the same month in 2009, as more people turned to the internet to complete their shopping.
The latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index found that Brits spent £6.8 billion shopping online during December, representing a seven per cent rise on November's figures.
Additionally, 2010's figures as a whole saw £58.8 billion in ecommerce spending, an 18 per cent rise on the previous 12 months.
Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said that there were two reasons for the rise, including poor weather during the month.
He added: "The ongoing trend of consumers putting down the car keys and turning on their computers is only set to continue particularly as consumers use the power of the web to make their money go further as the economy recovery remains fragile."
Best Buy announced last week that its online website had a "strong performance" over the Christmas period.
