Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) could require managed hosting after a new report revealed that many firms are unprepared for a computer disaster, including data loss.
Symantec's 2011 SMB Disaster Preparedness Survey found that half of SMBs questioned do not have a plan in place with a further 40 per cent saying that preparing for loss is not a priority to them.
It also found that a computer shutdown could see an SMB go out of business as the cost of losing information is high.
Bernard Laroche, senior director of SMB product marketing at Symantec, warned that SMBs are treading a fine line that could impact on the service they give their customers.
"Disasters happen and SMBs cannot afford to risk losing their information or – more importantly – their customers' critical information," he said.
"Simple planning can enable SMBs to protect their information in the event of a disaster, which in turn will help them build trust with their customers."
Gartner predicted last week that IT spending would increase to £2.33 trillion in 2011, suggesting that firms could invest in managed hosting to protect their information.
