UK government to turn to cloud computing to cut costs, report says
The UK government could be turning to cloud computing and other outsourcing methods in the next 12 months as it looks to shed costs during difficult economic times.
That is according to a report by analyst firm Ovum in its report 2011 Trends To Watch: Government Technology which says that departments will be made to start using cloud facilities in a bid to reduce long-term expenditure.
CA Technologies said last month that cloud computing is "coming of age" in large businesses with 92 per cent of big companies using at least one form of the technology.
Ovum analyst Jessica Hawkins said that the cost-saving benefits are a massive advantage for a government looking to trim its expenditure.
"Because cloud delivery means a lot of infrastructure is owned and operated by vendors and because payment is based on what you use, rather than just a flat-rate payment, it gives government departments the chance to make significant savings," she said.
