Companies advised to choose .com domain names over .net
Businesses have been urged to choose .com domain names instead of .net ones, in order to avoid potential conflicts later on.
Citing a recent case brought in front of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution (UDRP) board, domainnamewire.com highlighted the merits of .com addresses over alternatives including .net, .biz, .org and .info.
It explained that First Showing, which owns FirstShowing.net, has developed a strong following, but was unlikely to be able to do anything about a competing site set up at the much more browser-friendly FirstShowing.com.
This is because the site, which provides movie listings, has used a generic term for its domain name, meaning that other firms of the same name can rightfully offer similar services.
"Had the domain been something not specifically about movies - such as AlsCoolSite.net - then it might have a claim if the owner of AlsCoolSite.com starts showing movie listings," it stated.
"The panel denied the complainant’s request, saying the domain wasn’t registered and used in bad faith."
This week, sex.com was recognised as the world's most expensive domain name following its sale last year for £8.2 million.
