dot-co domain names to be big export for Columbia
The South American government is exporting its .co internet address suffix in the hope that domain names ending in .co will become as popular as those ending in .com.
According to the Boston Herald, internet domain names could become an important export for Columbia's economy.
Some 200 of the best .co domain names were auctioned this week, with investors obtaining them for a fraction of their .com equivalents.
With .com domain names so oversubscribed, Jeremiah Johnston, chief operating officer of domain brokerage Sedo, which was behind the sale, told the newspaper: "All the good names are taken.
"For small businesses, [switching to .co] is a chance for them to upgrade their domain names."
Sedo has been advertising the Columbian web addresses in the US with a radio add promotion. It is hoped that their popularity will overtake .net and .biz, both of which have seen little success.
