Almost four billion domain names have now been taken since the internet began nearly 40 years ago, according to the organisation that runs the distribution of addresses.
The Internet Address and Naming Agency has announced that it will be releasing the remaining seven blocks of domain names later in February, as the latest system - IPv4 - runs out combinations.
IPv6 will be introduced in the near future, according to The Guardian, but this will mean that some websites will not be accessible as it will not be possible for loads of people to use the same page at once.
James Blessing, from the UK's Internet Service Providers Association, told the news provider that IPv4 filling up is like the disappearance of oil wells.
"This is the equivalent of the oil wells drying up, and us not being able to find any new ones. We know there are multiple alternatives like electricity or biofuels, but as long as we have oil we'll use that," he said.
Vint Cerf, the vice president of Google, predicted in November that Europe would run out of address space in spring 2011.
