Changes that cloud computing could bring to businesses are now "widely recognised", according to a leading European commissioner.
Neelie Kroes, of the EU Digital Agenda department, told the world economic forum at Davos that adoption of computing in the cloud "will happen" as companies see the cost-saving benefits.
She added that every business or organisation is a potential user of the technology and it will therefore develop each company further.
Yesterday (February 1st) IBM launched a new cloud computing centre in Canada to help the country's companies implement the facility to use hosted applications.
Ms Kroes added that though the technology is in its early stages of use, it could help drive businesses forward in the future.
"We can deliver cloud computing by using research and innovation to bring about better clouds," she said.
"Along the way we can modernise our computing infrastructure and give our SMEs a new platform for innovation."
