More firms are turning to desktop virtualisation, which allows them to create an environment where all information from employees' local stations is stored on a central server that can be accessed using various devices.
That is according to the Blunt Blogger, which explains that the benefit of this approach is that employees can log in and access all the files they use on their company workstation from any desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet.
Writing on the site, Christy Rose explained that the user experience afforded by desktop virtualisation is still being refined, with great strides having been taken in recent times to ensure that remote access is as smooth as possible.
"Desktop virtualisation was developed after various IT organisations realised the disadvantage of handling desktops separately," she explained.
"Approaching desktop management from a desktop virtualisation angle can make the process more efficient, so time and money can be used where they are needed most."
Earlier this month, Steve Ball, a representative of Cloud 9, forecast that cloud computing will be looked upon as one of the "key technology trends of recent decades".
