Debenhams enjoying strong ecommerce performance
Debenhams has posted impressive retail figures for the half-year just finished, with its profits being driven in particular by strong ecommerce figures.
Online sales increased by a stellar 82 per cent in the six months to February 26th, which was enough for the company to consider reinstating its dividend.
Worse-than-expected footfall over Christmas and January and a bitterly cold winter were offset by improved electronic-sales, as consumers stayed at home to do their shopping.
The chain of department stores said it is on track to meet its fiscal forecasts, despite the economic situation.
Its pre-tax profits stood at about £128 million for the period in question, although Debenhams did say it expects trading across the high street to be difficult in the second half of the year.
"We believe that our focus on driving cash margin rather than just chasing sales will continue to benefit our profit and loss over the next few years," said Rob Templeman, chief executive of Debenhams.
