Ecommerce website popularity causing pre-Christmas spending rise
People are spending earlier in the run-up to Christmas because of the increasing popularity of ecommerce websites.
That is according to new research published by the Payments Council, which shows that UK consumers spent £11.2 billion in November, 84 per cent of the £13.3 billion total spend in December, suggesting that people are buying gifts earlier.
With cash machine withdrawals down and plastic spending up, internet spending is continuing to rise as more companies introduce their products to an online platform.
Sandra Quinn, director, communications, Payments Council, told finextra.com that "vast card usage in the UK" shows ecommerce sites are increasing their trade.
"The internet has really changed the way we shop at Christmas, with many of us choosing to shop on line to get the best deals and to avoid the shops at the busiest time of year, but you need to start early," she told the news provider.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Wal-Mart and Suning, two leading US retailers, will be targeting ecommerce success in China.
