More companies look to be using managed hosting after new figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that the worldwide server market had a strong final month of last year.
The Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker report shows that factory revenues across the world increased by 15.3 per cent in the final three months of last year, compared to the same period in 2009.
Across the whole year, worldwide unit shipments also increased by 15.3 per cent to 7.6 million servers, while revenues increased by 11.4 per cent in 2010.
Matt Eastwood, group vice-president of the IDC's enterprise platforms group, said that end users now have plenty of choice, including use of virtual private servers.
He added: "For end-users, there are more IT choices available than ever, many of which are designed to deliver impressive price-performance gains to the data centre and virtually all of these IT infrastructure solutions leverage server platforms at their core."
Earlier this week, Keir Thomas told cio.com.au that businesses not using virtualisation are at "serious risk" of being left behind.
