Managed hosting services to be transformed by data centre changes?
The provision of managed hosting services could change in the coming years as four significant forces impact on the way that data centres are managed and operated.
According to Gartner, the next five years will see four key forces having a significant impact on data centres.
These issues are smarter designs, increasing pressure to improve green performance, the computational density of the racks themselves (i.e. how much space in a data centre is actually taken up by the technology) and the potential of cloud computing.
David Cappuccio, managing vice president and chief of research for infrastructure at Gartner, explained that the traditional methods of design no longer apply to modern data centres as they are transformed by these factors.
"However, these very forced can actually work in your favour, providing the means to apply innovative designs, reduce capital costs and operating costs, increase long-term scale and keep up with business," he added.
Last week, IDC estimated that the global server market increased by 15.3 per cent in the final quarter of 2010, indicating that more firms may be using managed hosting services.
