The majority of businesses have not yet figured out how to properly use social media, and need to view it as a communication medium.
That is according to Michael Stelzner, founder and executive editor of the Social Media Examiner magazine, who said that many businesses are trying and failing to introduce social networking into their business.
He says that it is not about advertising products, but connecting with people and firms that do this will be successful.
A report by Experian Hitwise, published earlier this month, found that social media has now become one of the biggest activities online in the UK, overtaking the entertainment category during January.
Mr Stelzner added that companies must interact with customers, instead of just using the system as a product showcase.
"Indeed most businesses have not yet figured out that social media is not a broadcast medium, but rather an interactive medium," he said.
"That's why so many have tried and failed. Those that understand it's about human relationships are the businesses that thrive."
