Play.com suffers security problems with customer information
The importance of having a firewall and intrusion detection system in place was revealed by a leading online retailer the other day after a security breach.
Play.com faced a security failure that led to the loss of several customers' names and email addresses, however credit card and bank account information are not thought to have been taken.
The company has issued an email reassuring all of its clients that this was something to do with another company that manages its communications.
It read: "We take privacy and security very seriously and ensure all sensitive customer data is protected.
"Please be assured this issue has occurred outside of Play.com and no other personal customer information has been involved.
According to The Guardian, Play has around seven million registered users making it the second largest online gadget and games retailer in the UK.
It comes as Leicester City Council revealed that it had lost a USB memory stick that contained security codes.
