Online marketing methods could increasingly turn to targeting audiences that have smartphones after a leading organisation said that augmented reality technology on the device will "definitely grow" in the future.
Jon Mew, director of mobile & operations at the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), said that smaller businesses can benefit from mobile advertising as the physical physical and mobile worlds merge together.
He added that vouchers and discounts are being increasingly used as ways to tempt people to buy items from companies and these forms will continue to grow in the future.
Aurasma search technology was launched recently, bringing "augmented reality" a step closer.
It uses "visually convincing" images and videos to be superimposed directly onto real world objects appearing on smartphone screens, according to the New York Times.
Mr Mew added that apps are also "driving consumer usage".
"It's a key route for advertising – consumers want free apps, and they're only going to get those through advertising, so it will play a key part in the apps that people want," he said.
