Small and medium-sized businesses looking to market their products online could turn to Twitter after an expert said that it will be "hard to shift" the microblogging site.
Andrew Girdwood, the media innovations director at search and digital agency, said that any challengers to Twitter face a similar task to those looking to dethrone Google as the world's top search engine.
His comments come after news network CNN reported last week that UberMedia is planning to build a social network that could compete with Twitter.
Last month also marked the five year anniversary of when the first tweet was sent, according to the co-founder of Twitter Biz Stone.
Mr Girdwood added that any rival trying to set up a new Twitter will see it as a "ghost town" and nobody would be contributing.
"So, it's very hard for a start-up to rival Twitter – it would take somebody with a substantial user base already to hit a home run and just do something remarkable and get people using it immediately," he said.
