Businesses could look at introducing anti-virus and anti-spam protection on their computer systems after one expert said that people do not worry about cybercrime "until they've become a victim themselves".
Dan Nadir, the senior director of consumer products at Norton, said that security companies are trying to raise awareness as the majority of people struggle to protect their computers to a high enough level.
Additionally, he added that official statistics are often unrealistic as the majority of people that are the victim of such an attack do not report it.
Ed Valzey, the communications minister, told the Confederation of British Industry's form on eprivacy and the digital economy last week that it is suprising "how few of us know how to make ourselves more secure online".
Mr Nadir believes that many computer users are not protecting themselves online, leaving them open to potential attack.
"People tend not to think about cybercrime until they've become a victim of it themselves," he said.
"Official statistics are likely to be conservative, as many people do not know who to turn to in the event of a cyber attack, which means it is usually left unreported."
