Small and medium-sized businesses must ensure that the security packages on their computer systems are up-to-date to make sure that their websites are safe.
That is according to Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, an internet security awareness organisation, who said that it is essential that businesses do not "take any shortcuts" with their anti-virus and anti-spam software.
He added that it is not only about "protecting their image", it is also about keeping their customers' details safe.
According to a blog on the Websense website, criminals are using new malicious mass-injection campaigns to exploit security loopholes on websites, telling users that their PC has been infected.
Mr Neate added that keeping security settings up-to-date is the most important way of stopping any potential threats.
"What they have got to ensure is that they have got a fully up to date system and have an operating and up to date security package, and also that their operating system and all their applications are fully up to date," he said.
"That is probably the most important thing that they can do to safeguard themselves."
