Businesses targeting UK consumers online have been given 12 months to make sure their websites comply with new EU requirements on cookies.
It follows new rules introduced by the UK government, under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, which say that UK businesses and organisations will have to get the permission of visitors before storing cookies on their computers.
The Information Commissioner will now be in charge of providing guidance on how it will enforce new rules on cookies and what it is doing in regards to its own website.
Andreas Edler, managing director at Hostway UK, said that the government must now focus on teaching people what cookies are.
He added: "After all, if people choose to opt out of cookies, the personalisation that they’re used to could crumble, meaning that website may no longer be able to save passwords, login details etc.
"What is clear is a solution is needed quickly or the government risks stifling web innovation, which is no good for either businesses or consumers."
Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, said the delay in introducing the law was because it will "take some time for workable technical solutions to be developed".
