Brands 'must think fast about domain name acquisition'
Brands have been urged to think "hard and fast" about acquiring new domain names, after the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) gave the green light to new address suffixes.
Icann's decision means the number of domain names - such as .com, .co.uk and .org - that are currently in operation will increase from 22 to several hundred.
The application process will only be open from January 12th to April 12th 2012, leading Melbourne IT DBS chief executive Theo Hnarakis to recommend that companies take the matter seriously.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, he insisted it is important for businesses to make their websites as easy for consumers to find as possible.
He remarked: "These new domain names represent an amazing opportunity for companies to really stamp their brand online, instead of having to take on URLs which don't have their exact brand title in."
The Icann board voted 13 to one in favour of the plans to launch the new suffixes, known as generic top-level domains.
