'Exciting new businesses' could be built around new top-level domain names
People have the chance to build "exciting new businesses" around new top-level domain names, according to an industry expert.
Rick Spence, an IT writer, told the Vancouver Sun that the new dot anything domain names could become the most valuable around, changing the way businesses and people use the internet.
He added that the best sources of information look set to be on these domain suffixes, rather than older types such as dot com.
ICANN's communications manager for ICANN's domain name programme Michele Jourdan said earlier this month that people looking for domain name registration will have "way more choice" when new suffixes are introduced.
Mr Spence told the news provider that "there is gold in URLs", especially for people in Canada.
"If Canadians want to be top global players in natural resources, agriculture, technology, communications, professional services, or doughnuts and coffee, business leaders have to get moving now to own these top-level domain names - and the chance to build exciting new businesses around them," he added.
