Scottish domain name 'will boost country's brand'
A new Scottish domain name will help to boost the country's brand, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) has said.
Garry Clark, head of policy and public affairs at the organisation, backed the plans for Dot Scot Registry to apply for and operate a domain name with .scot suffix.
"I certainly think it will give the brand 'Scotland' more identity," he commented. "Anything we can do to push that strong brand is going to be extremely welcome in years to come."
His comments come after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) voted in favour of allowing the number of domain name endings to be increased from the current total of 22.
According to Icann, it will cost $185,000 (£116,000) to apply for one of the domain suffixes and interested parties will have to prove they have a genuine claim to the name they are trying to secure.
The body is currently seeking feedback on its strategies to raise awareness of the domain names.
