Anti-virus news: Cyber breaches 'affect nine in ten businesses'
The importance of anti-virus software has been illustrated by new research that revealed nine in ten businesses suffered an online security breach in the past year.
According to the Ponemon Institute, cyber attacks have almost become a "statistical certainty" for companies, with 59 per cent reporting two or more breaches during the study period.
Two-fifths of respondents said there has been a "significant increase" in the frequency of these hits on their networks, while 77 per cent said the issue is becoming more severe or tougher to contain or detect.
It is estimated that companies spend at least $500,000 (£309,000) on addressing the threat of cyber attacks.
Dr Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the institute, said: "Conventional network security methods need to improve in order to curtail internal and external threats."
This week, the US Department of Justice disrupted an international 'scareware' scam that sold $72 million of fake security software to 960,000 internet users.
