Software as a Service (SaaS) will account for the vast majority of public cloud services spending over the next four years, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
The analyst predicted that around 75 per cent of all investment in the channel will be directed at SaaS between now and 2015, with the forecast covering applications, as well as all three software-oriented cloud categories.
Over the same period, spending on hardware-based cloud services - such as servers and storage - will largely be driven by the needs of SaaS suppliers to expand their infrastructure, IDC claimed.
Frank Gens, the organisation's senior vice president and chief analyst, said: "Cloud services are interconnected with and accelerated by other disruptive technologies, including mobile devices, wireless networks, big data analytics and social networking."
Responding to the publication, Derrick Harris of GigaOm claimed the prediction is largely "right on", although it may take a little longer for SaaS to enjoy the levels of uptake suggested in the report.
