Green IT services, such as cloud hosting, look set to become more widely deployed over the next few years, according to a new study.
Ovum's Green IT Deployments Across Key Global Markets report found that around three-quarters of chief information officers have deployed cloud services within their organisation as they look to cut costs and energy use.
Moreover, eight per cent said that they are planning to introduce green IT by the end of next year, suggesting that more firms will be turning to server hosting and other services in an attempt to become more energy efficient.
Rhonda Ascierto, Ovum analyst and author of the report, said that green IT is now being seen as a "core technology" that delivers business value by cutting costs.
"We believe this change has occurred because of constrained IT budgets and a sluggish global economy in the wake of the recession, which forced organisations to scrutinise spending on all types of IT," she said.
"Many CIOs have for the first time had to calculate a financial return on investment of green IT."
Cloud hosting services "level the playing field" for small companies in the technology stakes, according to Basil Daniells, regional sales director for Epicor, said last week.
