VMware unveils vFabric 5
VMware has announced the launch of its vFabric 5 product, an integrated application platform aimed at the cloud and virtual markets.
The system, which will be generally available in late summer, provides all the necessary technology to build, deploy and run the latest apps.
For the first time, vFabric 5 includes a flexible packaging and licensing model that means customers can purchase software based on virtual machines (VMs), rather than physical hardware.
This means different components can be rolled out across numerous VMs in a given data centre, the company explained.
Tod Nielsen, president of the VMware application platform, noted that app infrastructure technology has advanced, but business models have remained "rigid".
"With the introduction of VMware vFabric 5, VMware will inextricably link the cost of application infrastructure software to volume utilised by the organisation and the value delivered back to the business," he commented.
In the first quarter of 2011, VMware saw its revenues grow by 33 per cent year on year to $844 million (£522 million).
