Businesses use video streaming for Wimbledon viewing
High numbers of employees used their businesses' internet connection to watch action from Wimbledon using video streaming, statistics have revealed.
A traffic graph published by Fluidata displayed surges across core network links as internet traffic increased while staff members viewed the tennis tournament on BBC iPlayer.
The findings emerged after the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed that 86 per cent of employers would not allow workers to watch the tennis, despite the organisation's claims it would boost morale.
In addition, service provider Eclipse Internet claimed "computer chaos" would take place if employees were permitted to take time out of their duties to watch the matches.
Company director Clodagh Murphy, said: "Streamed content uses a lot of bandwidth, making a fast and reliable connection even more imperative to make sure their system doesn't crash."
Similar internet traffic patterns occurred last year with employees using video streaming to watch the World Cup, with the same expected to take place during the 2012 Olympic Games.
