Ecommerce spending 'up 14 per cent in last year'

Ecommerce spending 'up 14 per cent in last year'

Ecommerce businesses could have seen increases to sales in the past 12-months, with comScore reporting significant rises throughout the sector.

According to the digital analyst, spending in the industry rose by 14 per cent in the past year, representing the seventh consecutive year of growth in this area.

The figures, which reached $37.5 billion during the second quarter of 2011, also highlighted the third year in a row when double-digit increases have occurred.

Furthermore, the quarterly figures showed that the growth came about as a result of more people using the internet to purchase items, with 70 per cent of internet users buying at least one product during the three months.

Event tickets, computer hardware and consumer electronics were named the most popular products among online shoppers in the past 12-month period.

Gian Fulgoni, comScore's chairman, said: "Ecommerce's benefits of convenience and lower prices continue to be the drivers of the shift … [Although] we are constantly reminded of an overall macroeconomic situation that is not indicative of a strong recovery."

Small and medium-sized ecommerce businesses have also benefited from the increasing popularity of online shopping through regaining lost market share. The figures showed that the top 25 online retailers accounted for 1.3 per cent fewer dollars spent online than last year.

However, Mr Fulgoni predicted tough times ahead for all commerce businesses as a result of the continued international economic struggle.

"With … the unemployment rate stubbornly high and financial markets in turmoil, consumers are less optimistic today than they have been in the preceding quarter, which raises concerns for the future," he remarked.

This news comes after research from online giant Google and Nielsen revealed that the average path to purchase in the UK's ecommerce sector is often more than 30 days.ADNFCR-1984-ID-800695477-ADNFCR
