Cloud services concerns 'should be set aside'

Businesses with concerns over the validity of cloud services as a means of improving company methods have been urged to adopt the feature on a gradual basis to examine its benefits for themselves.

Alex Parker, digital marketing director of Commensus Cloud Computing, suggested that any worries over the effectiveness of the feature in streamlining IT operations should be eradicated by companies looking to make vital improvements to their everyday tasks.

"There has been little evidence of businesses experiencing troubles with access to data and with comprehensive service level agreements that specify virtually constant availability, any remaining concerns should be set aside," he asserted.

His comments were made after it was revealed that increasing numbers of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were adopting cloud computing as a result of the emergence of price-per-user models.

The Public Cloud allows firms that have struggled to compete with wealthier firms, in terms of the adoption of technology, to take advantage of the numerous opportunities presented by cloud computing.

Jack Wilson, the company's digital marketing manager, urged SMEs to start "thinking big" in an age where unified communications can be utilised to improve the general running of a business.

In addition, he advised office workers to adopt the price-per-user method to reap the financial benefits of enterprise-level services, security and products, for a lower fee than larger enterprises.

Mr Wilson's comments emerged as more directors begin to recognise alterations in the dynamics of their companies now staff are able to work more cost-effectively from any location.

This may also prove to be extremely beneficial to employees who can gain access to shared documents with enhanced mobility and access to their personal work profile from any device, including personal laptop, smartphone and media tablet.

Using cloud services, members of staff are able to collaborate on particular tasks or projects from any location using one responsive unit where users can sign into their emails, files and diaries.

In addition, Mr Wilson highlighted the plausibility of home workers among small companies using the services, or the opportunity to open small branch offices, which allows them to compete with more wealthy organisations.

The effective nature of cloud services can also improve the productivity and innovation of staff members by allowing them to access the latest technology while removing the need for investment in upgrades.

This allows small businesses to utilise the same services as large corporations without spending any more than they need to, which could prove useful when offering services in an industry with a high number of competitors.

Mr Wilson reassured SMEs who may be worried about the security of their data after the adoption of cloud computing about the safety of centralised applications. By storing all information in a data centre, it is much easier to ensure privacy.

Moreover, the adoption of unified communications removes the requirement of storing any information on external devices, which means there is no need for concern about information being stolen or leaked if the hardware goes missing.

Earlier this week, an article published in the Financial Times suggested that it was more important for company executives to understand the opportunities presented by cloud services, rather than simply choose to ignore it because of a lack of knowledge.

Writers Eduardo Alverez and Mike Cooke claimed that few people will take the service for granted within the next ten years due to the fact that it provides a vast array of opportunities.

"By then most people in the developed world will be connected to the cloud in some fashion, unlocking a tremendous amount of opportunity and wealth," they added.ADNFCR-1984-ID-800704031-ADNFCR
