Cloud services trend 'is set to continue'

Cloud services trend 'is set to continue'

Businesses considering the adoption of cloud services in a bid to improve employee productivity and reduce IT costs could be interested in recent predictions from an expert.

Writing for the Virgin Media Business official blog, the company's managing director Mark Heraghty predicted that the popularity of the service would continue to grow in upcoming years.

As a result of less reliance on external gadgets, such as DVDs and USB sticks, to save items, Mr Heraghty also suggested that the internet would become the primary method used by individuals wanting to access media and applications.

"By the end of the decade, the storage devices of today could look like ancient relics," he remarked.

His comments come in the light of issues raised by Charles Arthur on the Guardian's Technology Blog recently, where readers were asked to predict what computers will look like in five years.

Accessing online content from remote locations is also set to get easier for consumers as a result of the increasing popularity of cloud services, with Mr Heraghty also predicting a rise in the production of 3G and 4G-enabled devices.

In addition, the expert suggested that the emergence of media tablets, used by consumers for a wide range of activities, could blur the lines between using technology for business and pleasure.

"We may even get to a stage where most people only use one device to manage everything in their professional and personal lives, though it'll take a little longer than five years before that becomes the norm," he said.

Earlier this month, Virgin Media Business unveiled plans to work alongside IT Professional Services Newcastle to ensure customers are given access to reliable internet connections across the city.

As part of the move, the company will undergo a £500,000 upgrade to deliver carrier speeds of 10 Gbps to connect its three data centres in Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland.
