Private cloud services 'offers $36 billion revenue opportunity'

Businesses contemplating the use of cloud services in a bid to streamline their IT operations and improve employee productivity could be affected by recent predictions from Canalys.

The independent technology analyst has today (August 23rd) announced that when supplied privately, the infrastructure and services market offers international channel partners the opportunity to make $36 billion (£27.7 billion) revenue this year.

"Private cloud initiatives provide the obvious choice for channel partners looking to grow new business," remarked principal analyst Alastair Edwards.

However, the analytics firm revealed that the public cloud services segment is currently dominating the market and is expected to account for $85 billion of revenue in 2011 as a result of consumers driving its expansion through Google, Microsoft Facebook and YouTube.

"The IT partner community is as relevant as ever, thanks to its close customer relationships. Proximity, along with a history of product sales, gives channel partners a strong position from which to support internal cloud rollouts" Mr Edwards added.

Accounting for the majority of the $40 billion cloud computing industry, the private segment has been invited to join other IT brands at the Canalys Channels Forum to discuss the benefits of the service and its impact on spending in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Prospective guests are able to apply to attend the event, which will feature best-practice workshops and one-to-one meetings with industry leaders, on the research firm's website. It will be attended by Cisco, EMC and Juniper Networks, along with emerging vendor Crucial and hundreds of channel partners.

In a recent interview with the Belfast Telegraph, former chief information officer for Westminster City Council David Wilde suggested that private cloud services models are more efficient for organisations that need to ensure data is stored in an appropriate fashion.

Currently working on Essex County Council's adoption of the service, Mr Wilde said cost of moving to a private scheme was up to 25 per cent lower per year than traditional infrastructures.
