Microsoft's server and tools business president Satya Nadella has highlighted the opportunities for firms utilising connected devices.
Mr Nadella, who was speaking at the IT giant's Build conference, revealed that the application development sector is required to adapt to suit evolving client needs.
He advised businesses to accept Microsoft investment in a bid to enjoy considerable assistance from the expertise in driving innovation and creativity.
While highlighting the company's significant role in a number of operations involving smaller enterprises, Mr Nadella also previewed a number of upcoming products.
"We are focused on helping developers build the next generation of client applications that are tethered to a back-end cloud," he remarked.
His speech was made after Microsoft announced the launch of its OSPI Microsoft IT Academy programme with Randy Dorn, the Washington state superintendent of public instruction.
The new scheme is set to be made available to both staff and pupils in 700 public high schools.
