Cyber criminals 'targeted 8.5m UK homes in Q1'
The importance of firewall, intrusion detection and anti-virus software has been highlighted by a new study from TalkTalk.
According to the internet service provider, more than eight million homes in the UK were targeted by cyber criminals in the first quarter of 2011, with problems ranging from bombardments by unwanted pop-up adverts to full-scale system hacks.
Between the start of January and the end of March, Britain's households were the victim of more than 700,000 identity theft attempts.
The study was published in the wake of new figures from the Office for National Statistics, which showed that 77 per cent of homes have internet access, but more than a fifth of users do not believe they possess the skills needed to protect their personal data.
Commercial director at TalkTalk Tristia Clarke said: "The internet is ultimately a wonderful thing that helps us communicate with friends, access a world of information and even save money. But there are some risks we need to be aware of."
