Cloud services 'present opportunities for WSPs'

Wireless service providers (WSPs) are reaping a number of benefits from the increasing popularity of hosted cloud services, with more success expected in the coming years as the service becomes more accessible, it has been suggested.

Analytical company HIS iSuppli has predicted revenues for WSPs will grow five times larger during the upcoming five years, with the organisation expecting income to rise to more than $100 billion (£63 billion) by 2015.

The HIS iSuppli Mobile and Wireless Communication Research Area revealed that a significant increase to the number of regular consumers adopting hosted cloud service will also provide positive implications for telecommunications providers.

Jagdish Rebello, senior director and principal analyst for communications and consumer electronics at HIS, said: "Cloud computing is a convenient, on-demand service over the Internet, through which users can pay for applications or storage space provided by a third party based only on the amount used."

Consumer and business spending on the popular technology is set to rise to $110 billion in 2015, which represents a significant increase from $23 billion in 2010, with public cloud expecting to surge by 52 per cent to $35 billion this year.

A primary benefit associated with the use of cloud services is that it offers users a more personal IT experience that is geared towards the needs of the consumer, including those offered by Apple, Google and Amazon, which allows them to manage their own data and take control of their future plans.

"Imagine not having to commit ahead of time for such things as software expenses, storage capacity or application licenses and instead paying for only what you use and dynamically updating the use of whatever you need," Mr Rebello explained.

The predictions emerge after Nicola Mortimer, head of ICT and business development at O2, suggested that hosted cloud services allow businesses to gain access to the complete online market space.
