Sussex Police have taken part in what is believed to be a world, first video streaming experience that allows individuals to log on to their computers and catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the county's authorities.
Nearly 18,000 people are thought to have tuned in to the first hours of footage that offered a preview of a behind-the-scenes look at the regular tasks carried out by officers and officials in the region, reports the Press Association.
Utilising mobile handsets, laptops and a free live video streaming application, the "day in the life" account of Sussex Police's activities allowed viewers to join in with web chats on social networking website Twitter.
More than 500 comments and questions were posted during the early hours of the broadcast, which saw the public taken on an online tour of the police helicopter, view the Specialist Search Team diving at Shoreham Harbour and witness scenes of crime office Chris Gee search a car in Brighton.
The programme, which featured footage of varying quality, aimed to broadcast the challenges its officers and staff are forced to contend with every day.
Chief Constable Martin Richards claimed the project was intended to "lift the lid on policing in 2011" during a time when questions are being asked about the effectiveness of the police in solving and preventing crime.
A spokesman told the Grantham Journal: "The live event was just the beginning of Sussex Police People, a year-long project that's part of our ongoing commitment to forging closer links with the communities we serve."
This comes after a study carried out by competitive intelligence firm Experian Hitwise revealed UK internet users spend 240 million hours watching online video content per month.
Additionally, the findings highlighted a 35 per cent year-on-year rise in the popularity of video websites, with users making 785 million visits during September.
