Businesses 'can take steps to improve data security'

Businesses hoping to improve their security measures in a bid to prevent the ongoing threat of cybercrime have been advised to take simple steps to ensure they are not among the millions of users who fall victim to an attack.

Paul Kenyon, chief operating officer of Windows privilege management company Avecto, stated there are a number of things organisations can carry out to protect themselves from illegal activity, primarily by investing in data loss prevention tools.

"[This will] stop individuals from transferring data they shouldn't have accessed. Before you even get to that [you should] ensure that people don't have access to information that they shouldn't have that they are not party to," he explained.

His comments were made after a recent report from Chatham house highlighted the need for an effective strategy to protect critical national infrastructure against the continual threat of cyber attacks from external sources.

As part of the Cyber Security and the UK's Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) document, analysts suggested the increase in cybercrime could pose a substantial concern to the government, but it cannot be met by politicians alone.

Mr Kenyon went on to warn organisations about the dangers that using a shared device can raise: "If that is a shared device, then anybody else who logged on to that machine can then go and have a look at their saved documents and see what they have written."

Following the Chatham House report, the body called upon CNI businesses to take on greater responsibilities to protect themselves against the continuing threat of security attacks, while company employees should raise their awareness of online attacks and improve their operations to prevent such events from occurring.

Report author Paul Cornish said: "Given society's reliance upon digital processing and communications, governments are right to take cyber security seriously."
