Video streaming popularity is expected to continue on a path of significant growth as a result of emerging technologies supporting the service, as well as the increasing accessibility of online video content, new research has revealed.
A recent report carried out by UK-based organisation Futuresource Consulting forecast over 770 billion views of legitimate free and paid-for video services in the UK, France, US and Germany this year.
Mai Hoang, senior analyst at Futuresource Consulting, commented: "Brands have only recently started to harness the full potential of online video, with ad-funded revenues expected to grow by 50 per cent in 2011 as advertisers continue to develop and refine content specifically for the online environment."
Findings also revealed online video views are on track to rise by 20 per cent during 2011, driven by online purchase and rental transactions, with the majority of revenue coming from the US through streaming subscription service Netflix.
Additionally, the report predicts paid-for video streaming in Europe will be pushed forward by the launch of a number of regional subscription services, likely to be led by YouTube, Apple and Netflix.
YouTube is thought to be one provider that has acknowledged the potential of online advertising as it introduces new initiatives to drive consumer engagement on ad-funded videos.
"With tablets showing even more impressive growth and evolution, content holders, broadcasters and hardware manufacturers are increasingly interested in the relatively untapped growth potential," Ms Hoang predicted.
This comes after competitive intelligence firm Experian Hitwise revealed UK internet users spend 240 million hours watching online video content every month, representing a 36 per cent year-on-year increase in the popularity of video websites.
Additionally, researchers highlighted users made 785 million visits to such websites during September alone, with analysts stating people were more likely to view online content than visit email providers, travel or sports sites.
