Ecommerce sales 'increased during October'

Britain's ecommerce sector continued to enjoy further growth during October 2011, with a new report highlighting the popularity of the retail method increasing by a significant amount throughout the month.

According to new figures from the IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index, consumers in the UK spend £5.9 billion on internet shopping websites last month alone, representing a rise of seven per cent from September and a year-on-year upturn of 14 per cent.

Electrical goods were among the most popular items purchased over the internet during October, with year-on-year growth of 11 per cent, which is the highest recorded since April. This is thought to be as a result of discounting from retailers hoping to increase activity.

Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said: "In other sectors, for example travel, online allows retailers to get ahead of the competition by using innovative strategies reach affluent consumers and make money even in sectors which overall are not performing well."

Other areas experiencing strong growth during October were health and beauty, recorded a year-on-year rise of 53 per cent, representing the highest increase ever recorded in this sector.

The overall performance of the ecommerce sector during the month-long period suggests it will be on target to meet the IMRG and Capgemini's recent revised prediction that the total market will increase by 16 per cent by the end of the year.

Tina Spooner, chief information officer at IMRG, said: "Clothing retailers in general had a slow start to the month. This can be attributed to the very mild weather affecting consumer interest in their autumn ranges."

Meanwhile, the Payments Council recently suggested internet retailing has experienced a "coming of age" as a high number of consumers carried out their Christmas shopping online and earlier with their cards.

Sandra Quinn, director of communications for the organisation, suggested the internet had revolutionised the way consumers carried out their shopping during the festive period due to the number of discount offers available online.
