Ecommerce brands looking to make their website accessible to smartphone users could receive further encouragement following comments from an industry expert claiming the sector continues to grow.
Stefan Boyle, ecommerce and marketing specialist, urged companies to consider using the format because it allows consumers to buy items as quickly as possible and gives them no time to grow frustrated with complicated websites.
He said: "If you've got a facility for people to buy as quickly as possible - it's the same with any website - the less clicks possible to actually get them to order, the better it is."
The expert, who is the founder of PrintRepublic.co.uk, went on to suggest that making customers feel secure when they are purchasing items is an important factor for ecommerce brands to consider and recommended the use of a familiar platform such as PayPal.
His comments were made after new research from Gartner revealed international sales of mobile devices reached 440.5 million units during the third quarter of 2011, representing a 5.6 per cent increase from the same period of 2010.
Sales of non-smartphone devices were also on the increase during this period as a result of demand in emerging markets for low-cost gadgets. Smartphones also continued to perform well and reached 115 million units during the September quarter.
The Gartner research highlighted Nokia as the international leader in mobile device sales, accounting for 23.9 per cent of the global market. Following a difficult period during the second quarter of 2011, the company saw signs of improvement in the past three months.
Mr Boyle suggested the key to success of an ecommerce brand is making customers feel as secure as possible, with many consumers getting nervous at the prospect of online fraud.
"The beauty of mobile is you can offer a one, two, three-step process and then they've bought," he explained. "I think it's definitely something I'm seriously looking into with my business."
